Protection of Reinforced concrete structures by means of water repellent agents



Chloride penetration into the concrete cover is one of the most frequent reasons for early damage of reinforced concrete structures. Service life of concrete structures can be reduced significantly in this way. Capillary suction of aqueous salt solutions by the porous structure of concrete is a most effective mechanism of transport of chlorides ions. Water repellent treatment of the porous structure avoids capillary suction and therefore it can be considered to be an efficient chloride barrier. There are two distinct ways to make concrete water repellent. Most frequently the surface is impregnated with an appropriate compound such as silane or a silane-based product. An alterative method to surface impregnation is the addition of silane to fresh mortar or concrete. In this case the entire volume of a concrete element is water repellent.

So far, however, results in practice have not always been satisfying. One aim of this project is to determine the necessary penetration depth when surface impregnation is to be carried out. In the case of integral water repellent treatment the minimum amount of silane, which has to be added to achieve a reliable and durable chloride barrier has to be determined. Some results of ongoing investigations into surface impregnation have already been published (see for example Ref. [44,45, and 53].The project on integral water repellent treatment has just been started.
